If you fail the exam

We understand that it is disappointing to fail a social work licensing exam. When you are ready to begin preparing for your next attempt, we suggest you begin with the unofficial score report you received at the test center. It breaks down your performance by exam content area and serves as a good resource as you make a study plan. ASWB can’t provide you with a duplicate diagnostic report.

Now what?
When you are ready to retake the exam, contact ASWB’s Candidate Services Center. Our representatives will be able to tell you whether you need further approval from your social work board to retake the exam. If you have nonstandard testing arrangements, the representative can tell you if they are still valid. Be aware that some licensing boards limit the number of times a candidate may take the exam.

You will need to register with ASWB and pay the examination fee again. Please allow seven to ten days after your last test before trying to register again. Once your registration has been processed, you will receive your Authorization to Test email and may schedule your testing appointment with Pearson VUE.

90-day waivers
ASWB policy states that candidates must wait 90 days between exam attempts. This waiting period exists for exam security reasons. It also benefits the candidate because it sets aside time to prepare for the next attempt. Under limited circumstances, candidates may obtain a waiver that allows them to retake the exam before the end of the 90-day period.

Our representatives will be able to help you learn about the process and how to apply.

  • Not all social work boards allow candidates to receive 90-day waivers.
  • Not all candidates qualify for waivers. You may only receive a waiver if your job is in jeopardy because you have not passed the exam AND your score was within five correct answers of the passing score.
  • You must formally request a waiver and provide documentation of your job jeopardy.

Candidates may not receive more than two waivers for any single examination category.

Contact ASWB about a 90-day waiver

You must wait 90 days from your last attempt to retake the exam unless you obtain a waiver.

You may register for your next exam attempt any time after ASWB receives your official exam results, provided you don’t need further approval from the state or province where you’ve applied for a license.

You may schedule your new testing appointment with Pearson VUE after you have received your NEW Authorization to Test email. You must schedule a testing date between the eligibility date and expiration date in this email.
